I read this book as a tourist of Turkey one who had visited many times but without fully appreciating its diverse cultures and belief systems I recognised the hope in which Demirtas writes but was in eual measure both enlightened and repelled in the bleak portrayal of the life of the poor where pride and fear often exacts a barbaric toll on life To be poor is hard to be a Kurd it seems is worse To be a female is to be a slave to all I have mixed feelings after reading this book I need to re read to this to fully grasp its messages Powerful emotive stuff in very simple yet elouent writing I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to develop some knowledge and understanding of Turkish political and social systems past present and future at a pivotal point in Turkey s history
