جای خالی سلوچ رمانی رئالیستی از محمود دولت‌آبادی است که بلافاصله پس ا?. Soluch was a good man One morning however he got up from where he slept just outside their house near the oven walked away and never came back When he left without a word his family was still asleep wife Mergan their two teenage sons Abbas and Abrau and their youngest a ten year old girl named HajerIt was not clear why he left Why this industrious responsible man would do the utmost act of irresponsibility abandoning his family But there was this hopeless withering poverty The poverty of the family the place and the people This was Zaminej a small village in Iran Children work sometimes they play but not once will you read words like school teacher vacation electricity or of books being read The characters almost always eat nothing but bread if they have it Bread for breakfast lunch and dinner Sometimes just tea for meals Sometimes just water Winter is almost always starvation time To start a fire they have to beg for ember from those who have it Fuel is what you can gather from the woodsAnd the brutalization of women One character drove away his own mother like a stray cat and when she died he vented his anger upon his own wife and treated her like an old dog I can imagine women gnashing their teeth in anger reading what this unjust world did to the mother Mergan and to this young sweet innocent Hajer Or even to Raghiyeh One heartrending scene after anotherThe narration is unsparing but with marvelous control It would have been easy for it to have slid down to a political tract or polemics but the author didn t allow it I am sure this would be a magnificent read in its Persian original allowing us a glimpse of how masterful Mr Mahmoud Dowlatabadi used that everyday language of the Iranian people to convey his message one character he made to exclaim how lucky they are to live in a RICH country Very clever Mr Dowlatabadi is still alive and lives in TehranThis is a lousy review of an exceptional book If you want to read better ones click the book s image and read the reviews of those who likewise gave it 4 and 5 stars

Mergan and Soluch have gradually been drifting apart they no longer find the companionship they once enjoyed in their marriage One day Soluch simply disappears No one knows where he s gone Set in an isolated village in Iran Mergan and her children two sons and a daughter immediately fighting to survive each day This book the first ever written in the everyday language of the Iranian people is touted as the most important work in modern Iranian literature Since I ve read uite a bit of Iranian literature I was really looking forward to reading this work because of its accolades I don t know if the book suffered from two high of expectations I went into it expecting the lyrical prose employed by many Iranian authors Reviewers have even described it as such However whether true in its original pen or if this was a result of translation I found it sparse yet pithy I also simply never cared about the characters nor the trials and tribulations they went through Needless to say I was sorely disappointed
